Movado

A brand in permanent motion

American luxury watch manufacturer with Swiss roots

Movado is an American manufacturer of luxury watches. The name is derived from Esperanto and means “movement” – a symbol of progress and constant change. The timepieces of the watchmaker from Paramus in New Jersey are particularly known for their characteristic metal dot at the 12 o’clock position as well as for their usually very minimalist style.

The Pilot Watch

The company was originally founded in 1881 by the then 19-year-old Swiss watchmaker and watchmaker Achille Ditesheim in La Chaux-de-Fonds, a Swiss city in the canton of Neuchâtel – it is one of the most famous cities for Swiss watch production, along with Biel and Le Loc. The young company quickly gained international fame for its wide range of attractive pocket watches, and later for the production of high-quality wristwatches – including today timepieces for pilots.

Since 1881, Movado has been a brand on the move , always changing, always innovating.

Movado at MoMA

With more than 100 patents and some 200 international awards for watch design and time technology, the company is considered one of the world’s leading watch manufacturers in terms of technical innovation and design excellence. In this respect, a Movado watch created by the Russian-American industrial designer and artist Nathan George Horwitt in the 1940s has not undeservedly made it to the MoMA Museum of Modern Art in New York.

Movado is a licensee of well-known brands

in 1983, Movado is acquired by the North American Watch Corporation – a company founded by Cuban-born investor Gedalio Grinberg. Grinberg flees the Caribbean island nation with his young family in the early 1960s and starts a new life in the United States as an investor and entrepreneur. Movado expands under Grinberg’s leadership, consistently growing the business through acquisitions and licensing of well-known brands and labels. Today, Modavo Group’s impressive portfolio includes Calvin Klein, Coach, Hugo Boss, Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Scuderia Ferrari.
